My parents told me about this place, and the way they spoke about him over the years already contained, in some way, the care that existed within. The stones emerging from the water, instead of sand, hold the promise of a continued gesture that the fish abundance under the currents confirms. It is a territory where small gestures, almost always nameless, repeated by the insistence of hands, rhythms, and attentions have become geography.

The waters remain transparent because of the care with which they have been seen and preserved, recognising in this place the marine ecosystem inhabited and cultivated by local communities and enthusiasts. Delimiting its human uses, this place has remained a meeting point for fish from cold and warm waters, where rocks, currents, bottoms, and sands welcome thousands of beings, sheltered by the care of humans who knew how to listen to them, intervene, and anticipate their needs. It is this repetition of discreet gestures that prevents immediate ruin and sustains attention: it is the care of the scientists, the fisherpeople, the residents, the merchants. Of those who clean, legislate, research in laboratories, and those who cross this land daily.

There is a calmness in this place: in the restaurant, resting on stilts, in the breeze that carries the fishing boat, in the tranquil everydayness of the smallest gestures. It is an invisible force that weaves a web of support, with the collaboration of the community and without seeking spectacle or the image that sells the best. The place is beautiful and mirrors to me the vulnerability of beauty: the precious and the fragile that live within it, the care that any gesture should sense. This place is beautiful and contains its wounds: the points where care failed, or was temporarily overcome by ignorance and greed.

For all this, entering this bay simultaneously expands and contracts the body: it expands through the beauty and care accumulated over decades, while the awareness of what wounds he holds closes it somewhat. I find myself measuring my steps, looking at the seeds and trees with an admiration that opens me up, as I run my hand over the placed stone and observe the fish with the respect and familiarity I learned from those who care for them. I wait my turn to pass, slowly, existing here in a more attentive body. Maintaining the flow of gestures that came before me, the place himself takes shape. And so the body acknowledges here a way of maintaining, of looking and listening that seems to be its own.

In cycles that come and go, stones and wood reveal the wear and tear of rising waters and denial; and that is why the caretaker, the scientist, the technician and the community emerge. It is a care that lasts over time, even though what remains is always only provisionally preserved, continuously accompanied. There is an ongoing negotiation between the crashing of the waves and human care, between matter and time, between extraction and belonging. Maintenance appears as a negotiation with loss, not as a triumph over it. Everything is provisional, thus, indispensable.

After a few hours, we leave. I look back, on the steep climb through the woods, and I revisit the discreet gestures I learned in that bay from my parents, while reflecting on how continuous care is discreet and invisible, revealing itself to those who look at it attentively. This place exists because he has been sustained repeatedly, simply and without pretension, even under the pressure of those who forgot that we inter-are with our context, depend on them, and thanks to them, live. I have been writing about regenerative practices, starting from art and design and from a critical and analytical position. Such remains necessary. But language, even when caring, can maintain distance. Explaining territories, waters, and relationships still placed them outside of me, as if the world remained on the other side of the sentence.

Yet I seek another way of being: to make nature legible as a relational entity. To practice listening to the landscape, the sea, the river, and the land, activating memory, body, ethics, and time.

We live as if places were mute. As if the ground had no memory, and as if cities were only form, function, surface, and nature a stable backdrop. And also as if nothing was listening back to us.

But places remember. Places resist, and places hold wounds that do not heal with projects nor slogans.

From places, we sprout. We make them, but they construct us even more. Without ruler or set square, without software or prior study. Places shape us slowly, moulding us without license or approval. Talking about places as objects or problems to be solved is insufficient. It is necessary to speak with places: to assume that they possess wisdom, that they feel time. That they also accumulate consequences. That they precede us, exceed us, survive us, and that they make us who we are.

This gathering demands the ethics of responsible proximity. Of care, and of involvement. Of poetry and art, as ways of understanding the world: as where other methods are exhausted, these remain. They are ways of learning the world that work with relationship, silence, ambiguity, and interpretation; not in opposition to science, but in continuity with it. And this also requires practice.

Teixeira de Pascoaes wrote that science studies the wave, and poetry fills it with water. We need narratives that make imaginable more responsible forms of coexistence between humans and these worlds that think back to us. In real, concrete places, where the situated body found itself at a moment when something asked to be listened to, and the body decided to welcome. In a space thus transformed, in slow and gradual gestation, the external laboratory and the exercise of observation are shared.

Among remnants, echoes, and attempts, places emerge as difficult teachers. Living archives, entities that observe us while we decide what to do in the world. Entering here requires time. The time to sit and listen, and to accept that learning also transforms us.

Otto Scharmer, economist at MIT, speaks of the “social field” as an invisible ground where relationships, intentions, and consciousness shape the future. Just as fertile soil gives rise to resilient ecosystems, a territory is more than geography: it is what we make of it — how we choose to live and inhabit it, how we cultivate an emotional relationship with it. The landscape is not an inert scenario: it speaks, and asks to be heard. If we pause to listen, what will this Algarvian land tell us? Certainly that a future based on the exploitation of its resources is a future that will not last. That every city, town, and coastal edge where land touches the sea holds a history that deserves to be respected. It will also tell us that development and ecological balance are not opposites, but an invitation to imagination, to the reinvention of ancient knowledges that knew how to care, and regenerate.

But to imagine a future, we must first understand the present. Algarve faces challenges akin to those of other coastal territories: the pressure from tourism, depletion of soils and aquifers, erosion accelerated by climate change, acidification and sea level rise, and the growing difficulty of sustaining life and work here year-round. And so we return to the foundational question: how do we rethink this territory beyond an extractive mindset?

To live and truly belong to a place is made of repeated gestures: to listen closely to the land, and to tend continuously to what grows from it. Movement and permanence can be complementary ways of cultivating deep bonds — with people, places, elements, and species — in a web of interdependence. The value of a territory is intrinsic and immeasurable, dwelling in the richness of its biodiversity, knowledge, memories, and in the relationships that coexist with each other. And it is upon this land that innovation and culture are called to act — listening and transforming, tending and being tended, weaving their future with that of the land that welcomes them, with the same commitment and generosity this land offers us, day after day.

In this territory, it may mean rethinking our daily activities as gestures of care, repeated attentively over time, like those who give back to the land at least as much as they receive. It means a renewed vision of professions: more than productive, regenerative; interrelated and cohesive, working towards the recovery of soil, plants, trees, seas and mountains, and the visible and symbolic relationships between them, and with us. There is urgency in calling forth integrated fields of knowledge, like a great orchestra: a regenerative urbanism, that bridges economy with ecology, identity with ongoing transformation, flourishing with memory. A culture that fosters regeneration, while strengthening a shared narrative, rooted in the act of cultivation alongside nature — as our ancestors likely once did, thousands of years ago. Though not new, it becomes a form of innovation: adapting our industries and knowledge to the present, rethinking methods, processes, and goals. And indeed, it opens the door to exceptional innovation.

Today, we hold the extraordinary possibility of shaping a future Algarve, beyond what we currently see: honouring the traditional and adapting it, continuing practices that have been wisely and beautifully carried out. Every day day we are offered the chance to imagine an Algarve beyond short-term cycles, within horizons of 100, 500, or 1000 years; to lead change with the courage of dreams and the boldness of possibilities. And we can do so by inhabiting the present in our bodies, in active listening, living this place in harmony and belonging with all that this land so generously nurtures in us. If we truly listen, the land will show us how. It is up to us to believe, to imagine, and to act.

As I was writing this, I kept returning to a conversation between Otto Scharmer and the Mind & Life Institute — a dialogue that feels like a gentle invitation to inhabit the future more consciously.

In the West, we live in a time when the word excellence seems to have been hollowed out. In favour of never-ending cycles of productivity and competition, excellence is no longer a measure of the soul and of living our full potential, but of speed and performance. Not a question of presence and insight, but of comparison.

This Aretē at least, is a refusal of that logic, and a retrieval of ancient meanings. A ritual of reorientation, individual and collective, an invitation to live and create from a place of inner, and outer, alignment.

In Ancient Greece, Aretē referred to the pursuit of one’s highest potential: a harmony between character and action, of values and embodiment. In that sense, excellence is not perfection, but wholeness; not power, but collaboration. Western contemporary science has come to show that the cultivation of virtues and personal excellence relates to wellbeing: to the flourishing and meaningful lives ingrained in another Greek concept, eudaemonia. And so, if the practice of these values and behaviours can be improved with conscious repetition and fine-tuning: why wouldn’t we do it?

Traditional and Indigenous wisdoms, as well as Western science, remind us of our interdependence: with each other, our environment, places, elements, other species. The quality of our lives is tied to the quality of these relationships: to our families, friends, neighbours, communities and colleagues, and to the complex living systems that surround and grant us life. Yet, building healthy bonds requires practice. And like any virtue, it asks for the refinement of aligning values with action. The same applies to our professions: how closely our values are reflected in our work affects our wellbeing. And in our society, where are those places of practice?

Culture — as both society’s ways of doing and as the making of artefacts —is a primary vehicle for that alignment. Through ritual and daily rehearsal, we get to inherit, reflect and innovate forms of communal flourishing. Cultures rooted in values expressed tangibly through action and refinement can be deeply regenerative.

This requires methods: of inquiry and reflection, of relating. It also requires a broader understanding of to whom we are relating: humans and more-than-humans, to what is visible and to what is not, to the ancestral and the future.

This project, Aretē, aims to contribute to that offering: a slow architecture of thought and action, for designers, artists, thinkers and seekers who want to make differently. Here, excellence begins with listening: with attunement towards the other, and appropriate, compassionate response. To the land, to the body, to ancestors and descendants; to all beings, and beyond.

It means asking permission before we create or take. It means re-membering that creating is relational, and that we are creating, whether we acknowledge it or not, in our daily lives. And that we can do so with care, with imagination, with new ways of being.

Here, attention is sacred. Excellence is a practice of presence and listening, not of control — an inner stillness that allows for compassionate response. In these paths, Aretē runs — in an imperfect, iterative attempt to live and create with integrity in a world of excess, using instability as a generative force.

In neuroscience, coherence between the brain, body and environment fosters wellbeing: not through dominance, but attunement. Aretē seeks that coherence, for practices that bridge what we value to what we do. A life and work becoming a nervous system in harmony — not above the world, but among it.

And in that, a practice of re-membering: that we are not separate from the Earth. That knowledge is not abstract thought, but cellular; that truth exists in the body before being spoken in words. That to live is the sacred. Creation, when rooted in ethics and attention, is regenerative. Excellence, here, is an ethical, aesthetic and embodied state. A becoming that is, above all, an act of love.

I write this as someone who is also learning to listen. Who forgets, and remembers, and listens again. These words are not mine alone, but echoes of others who walk(ed) slowly, who listened to the land and water; and of those same elements, other species and phenomena, with whom I practice these listening and exist in me, in more ways than I can understand. And while “regeneration” is a Western term used here, it acknowledges and reflects Indigenous ways of living — and opens space for practices like ethnomimicry. Ethnomimicry is an invitation to learn from the wisdom of cultures rooted in reciprocity — to attune to patterns of care, kinship, and cosmologies that see no separation between self and world. It is not appropriation, but reverence. A slow, relational practice of unlearning domination and reweaving presence with place. It asks: what does it mean to design with life, not just for it?
